Florida residents to convene at town hall Oct. 24
Erin Brockovich will be on hand Monday, Oct. 24, for a town hall meeting with residents of Deland, Fla., to answer questions about insecticide-tainted drinking water affecting a number of DeLand and Miami-Dade homes.
Brockovich consults for the nationally recognized environmental torts law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C. The New York-based giant is sending Brockovich to Deland because of her expertise in exposing injustice and her prowess for giving voice to those who lack one of their own.
“Erin is gutsy, and never intimidated,” said attorney Robin Greenwald, head of the Weitz & Luxenberg environmental torts unit, who will join Brockovich at the Deland town hall event.
Brockovich first catapulted onto the national stage in the mid-1990s when, as a clerk at a modest law firm, she uncovered evidence that a major Northern California utility for decades allowed toxic chemical Chromium 6 to contaminate the well-water supply of an entire town.
Her efforts led to a $333-million verdict against Pacific Gas & Electric, with winnings shared by all 600 residents of Hinkley ,Calif.
The Roberts movie, “Erin Brockovich,” dramatized the events surrounding the case and its record-shattering damages award.
Since then, Brockovich’s help has been sought by countless other victims of environmental poisonings in every state and in several other nations. In addition to cases in Florida, Brockovich currently is involved with actions in California, Texas, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri.
The Deland town hall meeting is set for 6 p.m. at First Assembly-DeLand, 551 S. Kepler Rd. Earl Ziebarth, a Deland homeowner whose residence is one of approximately 110 impacted by the contaminated water supply, organized the public event.
Also scheduled to appear will be attorneys from Morgan & Morgan, P.A., one of the leading personal injury and consumer law firms in the South.
Dieldrin contamination has been identified in the well water of communities in DeLand and Miami-Dade County. Local authorities have had to staunch the use of tainted well water by supplying filters and connecting homes to municipal water mains.
The Oct. 24 town hall meeting is intended to answer residents’ questions about Dieldrin and the impact that it may have on their property values and health.
Dieldrin is a chlorinated hydrocarbon originally produced in 1948 by J. Hyman & Co, Denver, as an insecticide. Dieldrin is closely related to aldrin, which reacts further to form dieldrin. Aldrin is not toxic to insects; it is oxidized in the insect to form dieldrin which is the active compound. Both dieldrin and aldrin are named after the Diels-Alder reaction which is used to form aldrin from a mixture of norbornadiene and hexachlorocyclopentadiene.
Originally developed in the 1940s as an alternative to DDT, dieldrin proved to be a highly effective insecticide and was very widely used during the 1950s to early 1970s. Endrin is a stereoisomer of dieldrin.
However, it is an extremely persistent organic pollutant; it does not easily break down. Furthermore it tends to biomagnify as it is passed along the food chain. Long-term exposure has proven toxic to a very wide range of animals including humans, far greater than to the original insect targets. For this reason it is now banned in most of the world.
It has been linked to health problems such as Parkinson’s, breast cancer, and immune, reproductive, and nervous system damage. It can also adversely affect testicular descent in the fetus if a pregnant woman is exposed to Dieldrin.
If you are concerned about contaminants in your drinking water, we recommend you have your water tested. Then if contaminants are found, search for a water filter that is NSF certified to remove those contaminants.
MultiPure has been NSF certified to reduce many contaminants and insecticides including Turbidity, Lead, Mercury, Arsenic V, PCBs, Chlordane, Toxaphene, Dichloroethane, Cysts, Trihalomethanes, Asbestos, Volatile Organic Chemicals, MTBE, Chloramines, hexachlorocyclopentadiene & many other contaminants of health concern.
