Study: Plastic Bottled Water Contains Up to 100 Times More Nanoplastic Than Previously Estimated

Yet another reason to filter and bottle your own water. A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that bottled water contains up to 240,000 plastic particles, 100 times more tiny pieces of plastic than was previously estimated. The scientists were able to find microscopic bits of plastic, called nanoplastics (which are particles less than 1 micrometer), by probing samples with lasers that were tuned to make specific molecules resonate. The researchers at Columbia University and Rutgers University tested three popular brands of bottled water sold in the U.S. They did not specify the brands tested in the study.

We haven’t even scratched the surface of the harms microplastics and nanoplastics will cause as they course through our blood and lodge in our organs. But we can guarantee without a reasonable doubt that they WILL cause harm. On top of that, it’s not just the particles that pose a health danger. We know for a fact that these plastic particles release a cocktail of toxic chemicals into our bodies. None of this nasty stuff belongs in your body. Make Our Food Safer.
