The award-winning documentary “Tapped” is embarking on an eco-aggressive 30-day/30-city cross country tour to get Americans “Off the Bottle.” Plastic water bottle, that is. Beginning World Water Day (March 22nd) Tapped’s Producer Sarah Olson and Director Stephanie Soechtig will take their mobile showroom on the road, collecting pledges from people to reduce their bottled water use and trading empty plastic water bottles for reusable stainless steel Klean Kanteens. This mobile translucent recycling container will begin the “Get Off The (h20) Bottle” tour in Los Angeles with an empty cabin that will be filled with the public’s empty water bottles by the time the team ends up in New York City on Earth Day (April 22nd, 2010).
Director Stephanie Soechtig says about the tour, “1,500 bottles of water end up in landfills every second – that’s 30 million bottles of water a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water – so if that means we have to drive city to city to get the point across than that’s what we’ll do!”
The tour – consisting of 30 scheduled screenings of Tapped followed by a town hall Q & A – will kick off in Los Angeles on March 22nd en route to New York City. The Tapped truck can be tracked online as the Tapped website will be overhauled – featuring celebrity guest columns by Ed Begley Jr and David de Rothschild, a public service announcement by Grammy Winner Jack Johnson, and daily videos and bonus clips from the film.
I got a letter from Stephanie Soechtig on Facebook today, her letter reads…
Friends,
The moment has finally arrived – the Tapped DVD goes on sale this Monday March 22nd (at www.tappedthemovie.com) in honor of World Water Day! We’ll also be available on iTunes and VOD beginning April 1st.
I’m writing to you today to ask for your help next week in spreading the word about the world water crisis and the perils of bottled water. Beginning this Monday we will be launching two initiatives that we hope you’ll support.
WHY SHOULD YOU HELP US?
Because we are taking on some of the media’s biggest advertisers (Nestle, Coke, and Pepsi) we cannot rely on traditional outlets to get the word out. One of our favorite talk shows couldn’t discuss Tapped on her show because Pepsi is her largest advertiser. So the time has come for us to call on our supporters to help us spread the word about the dangers we are facing and to protect our rights to access clean drinking water!!
Together, we can make a difference!
As those of you who have seen Tapped already know, bottled water is really a microcosm for some much larger issues facing our country: the world water crisis, the free-reign given to chemical corporations to use cancer causing agents in our products, the social injustice that effect minority communities across America, and plastic pollution.
It’s time to take action!
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1. Our first initiative will be the Tapped website will be (temporarily) overhauled in honor of World Water Week to feature a different aspect of the water crisis each day. We will feature a daily guest column, videos and public service announcements (including one by Jack Johnson!). We are counting on YOU to visit the website each day and share the videos/PSAs with your friends/family/loved ones/everyone you know. The content will change daily so it’s imperative you come back every day!
2. Also beginning World Water Day, our Line Producer Sarah Olson and I will be embarking on a 30 day 30 city cross-country “Get Off the Bottle” tour. We’ll be driving a glass truck across the country, trading people their empty water bottles for a pledge to reduce their bottled water use. All those empty water bottles will go in the truck with the goal of ending the tour in New York City on Earth Day (April 22nd) with a truck full of bottles and the pledges of thousands! We’ll have our tour route mapped out on the website and you can follow us on Twitter as well as our daily blog from the road.
You can take the Get Off the Bottle Pledge online by Get Off the Bottle Facebook page. SEND THE PLEDGE TO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!
This is a chance for YOU to make a difference. We hope you’ll join us!
Look for an email from us Monday morning announcing the launch of the new site!!
Warmly,
Stephanie
Thank you Stephanie for all your hard work and bringing this issue to the attention of millions of people accross the nation.
