Dr. Mercola’s “Pure & Clear” water filter
Recently I wrote an article about Dr. Mercola’s water filter. In this post Read Here I discussed the problem I see with Dr. Mercola’s water filter. I discussed the problem with NSF Certifications and saw none on his site, or the product that he was promoting. Dr. Mercola had been promoting a previous brand of water filter, (known as the “Pure & Clear”) which is now discontinued. The new water filter he is promoting as the “Pure & Clear” looks identical to the Aquasana but is being marketed by him and his company as the “Pure & Clear” water filter.
Now forgive me if I’m wrong, but the two product photo’s seen here look strikingly similar. However, this is not the problem. Again, my concerns are the fact that neither of these products are NSF Certified! Aquasana products are marketed by a company called “Sun Water Systems”. If you go to the NSF website and do a search, you will find that neither Sun Water Systems, Aquasana, or Dr. Mercola’s “Pure & Clear” water filters are certified and have never been NSF Certified.
Today, I again decided to do go to Dr. mercola’s Live Chat line to find out if in fact the water filter Dr. Mercola is promoting is indeed the Aquasana brand and to find out if is NSF Certified. I chatted with a nice lady named “Jennifer” . You may follow along our chat here:

It is illegal to claim that a product is NSF Certified if in fact it is not. Aquasana products are not NSF Certified. It is obvious that the product Dr. Mercola is promoting is Aquasana Jennifer.

I do apologize for the wait. I do see that in our notes, it stares that the filtration system was certified by the Underwriters laboratories, California department of health and services and NSF. No need Jennifer. I am in the water filter industry, and I can tell you for a fact that the product (if it is Aquasana) Is NOT NSF certified.

You will need to be very careful when telling customers that the product is NSF Certified, since it is not. This is considered deceptive advertising and could be punishible by law.

Thank You Katrina. Yes it is. Many consumers are uneducated, and when a prominant doctor with thousands of followers are duped into believing a product is NSF certified, It just really gets to me. Dr. Mercola really should know better.
Interesting post…As an avid mercola supporter and daily reader I was a bit surprised to see this! Other than the link above about the reviews of the aquasauna counter top filter, do you have any info suggesting the main whole house systems from Aquasauna/Mercola are bad? NSF compliance is a plus but any other info?

It should also be mentioned… the fact that not only is Dr. Mercola selling water filters that lack the proper certification, but at quite the price hike as well. I see no difference between the shower filter sold on Aquasana’s website listed here.. http://www.aquasana.com/product_detail.php?product_id=2
In comparison to Mercola’s “pure and clear” listed here, except for well.. the price of course. For 15 more dollars you get the same filter and a very deceptive lengthy description to make you feel as if you are getting much more.
Good eye on that one Cory! I noticed that too, but figured if people dont do their research, they will pay for it. Problem as I said, is they are taking advantage of unsuspecting customers…. Being that Dr. Mercola is such a respected “authority” on such topics. Not to mention the fact that now that Dr. Mercola has aligned himself with Aquasana, how many Aquasana affiliates are losing sales. I’m surprised that they have any affiliates left to promote their product.
Also, they mention Californa certification. I went to that site and California doesn’t certify SHOWER filters. That is deceptive.
Laura, it is a testament to you that you took the “bull by the horn” and explored this issue with Dr. Mercola’s office. I see it all the time how uninformed people are about the water they drink and how easily they are duped into thinking they are getting a bargain when they hear that the water “tastes better.” While tasting better is a good thing, that’s only the beginning of the story; there is so much more to healthy water that’s hidden below the “radar.” That’s of course, why we have the Multipure!
Even the NSF certification is easy to misunderstand by the uninformed. As you and I know, “NSF certified” and “Testing to NSF Standards” are not equivalent statements, in fact they differ greatly. But, how are the uninitiated to know?
