Contestant #5 in our blog contest: Article by Katrina Oakley
There are many ways to live Green these days. Green living is in. Everywhere you look there are Green products. There are, Green furniture, Green electronics, appliances, food packaging, even Green cars. There are many ways to live a Greener life. Think about what you use in your daily life. What types of food do you eat? What type of car do you drive? Is your home Green? What can you do in your daily activities to be more Green?
Simply changing some simple daily habits can help make the world you live in a Greener place. An example of one simple life change would be to start filtering your own tap water. Simply stop purchasing bottled water and drink filtered tap water. Filtered tap water is a much greener choice over bottled water. It takes 3 times as much water to produce the bottle as it does to fill it.
Fossil fuels and the related emissions from transporting and producing plastic containers America make it even worse. Not to mention that plastic takes 300 years to break down and degrade naturally. Drinking filtered tap water saves the environment in many ways. Bottled water causes over 60,000,000 plastic bottles to be produced, filled, transported and disposed of almost every day in America. It is an environmental nightmare. There is no guarantee that bottled water is healthier than tap water. The only way to insure that you are drinking clean, safe, Green water, is to filter your own tap water and stop drinking bottled water. Drinking filtered tap water can prevent up to12, 000 plastic bottles from ending up in landfills. At an average cost of 8-15 cents per gallon, home filtered water is also more economical than bottled water, which costs an average of $1.00 per single serve bottle.
To put this more in perspective, drinking home filtered tap water will save not only the environment, but it will also save money. The more people that stop drinking bottled water, the better it will be for the environment. Less bottles will be produced, less bottlestransported and less water wasted.
There are any number of ways to be Green these days. Filtering your home tap water and eliminating bottled water from your budget is a great way to be Green! Even the US government could eliminate their purchase of bottled water and save over 200,000 dollars!

Just what would you do with a potential annual savings of 1,500 dollars? What other ways are there to live Green and save money?

Thanks so much for your article Katrina! The environmental impact that bottled water has on our environment, oceans and sea life are not worth the cost. By installing a water filter on your faucet is by far the best way to combat this impact. If everyone replaced bottled water with a water filter, we would save millions of barrels of oil every year and save countless numbers of plastic bottles from ending up in our oceans or landfills. Good luck in the contest!

I am not sure where to post on your blog but in my household we minimize the electricity we burn by keeping the lights and televisions off most of the day as there is no need for them to be on we keep the heaters down to 1/4 since it is baseboard heating and difficult to maintain a constant temperature. I use cloth diapers on my baby and use wash cloths to clean her up instead of baby wipes. We keep to non electric graters and kitchen tools. I make my own cream of whatever soups to minimize the effect of cans being used. I recycle all the containers that i can recycle and use my bicycle to go as many places as possible.

Turn off the sprinkler system and hand water with a hose. I can’t tell you how many people are watering the street with automatic sprinklers. Hand watering saves a lot of ‘run off’

Hey Kat, I am a sales rep in my offline life for lighting products and even with these products there is new technology for “greener” products. The latest of which is LED lighting; this type of lighting is more efficient than fluorescent and incandescent saving literally millions of dollars on energy consumption.
Oh and as far as water, we have a manual system of filtering.
