November 9, 2013 by Laura

In 2011, the U.S. generated 32 million tons of plastic waste, accounting for near 13 percent of the nation’s total garbage, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. This waste included nearly 14 million tons of plastic packaging and containers, roughly 11 million tons of durable goods such as household appliances, and almost seven million tons of non durable goods, such as cups, plates, and utensils. Despite the enormous amount of plastic waste generated in 2011, only eight percent was ...[READ MORE]

Erin Brockovich wants consumers to put down the bottle and turn on the tap. "Bottled water is expensive," Brockovich told The Price of Fame at the Toronto International Film Festival. "People can save money by not buying as much bottled water and maybe investing in a good filter for the house." (Brockovich is still looking for a filter to endorse.) Americans spend an average of $100 a year per personon bottled water, according to published figures. That means the average family of four is ...[READ MORE]

California Attorney General Sues Companies Over False Biodegradable Claims

October 28, 2011 by Laura

LOS ANGELES — The California attorney general's office on Wednesday sued three companies over allegations they misled consumers by marketing plastic water bottles as biodegradable. The lawsuit – said to be the first government action to enforce the state's environmental marketing law – accuses ENSO Plastics of Mesa, Ariz., of falsely claiming their bottles would biodegrade in less than five years, leaving behind no harmful materials. It is illegal in California to label a plastic food or drink ...[READ MORE]

Environmental Group Sues Glacier for Consumer Fraud

August 27, 2011 by Laura

Glacier Water Services, the largest seller in California and the U.S. of filtered water from vending machines, claims its machines dispense chemical-free drinking water. But the first statewide tests of vended water for chemical contaminants found that one-third of Glacier machines sell water that fails state health standards, and two-thirds fail to live up to Glacier’s marketing claims. In a report released today, Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) say ...[READ MORE]

The Cost of Bottled Water – Is it worth it?

June 1, 2011 by Laura

Over half of Americans drink bottled water, spending 240-10,000 times more per gallon for bottled water than they do for tap water, a trend largely fueled by the belief that bottled water is safer and healthier than tap water. Is the cost worth it? Controversial reports from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Gland, Switzerland, and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in Washington, DC, say no. The 2001 WWF report Bottled Water: Understanding a Social Phenomenon, an overview of the ...[READ MORE]

Welcome to the water filter lady’s blog! Meet Laura…

I have been in the water filter business since 2006. My goal is to help educate you. Deciding to drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water can have huge benefits for the earth. We can eliminate unnecessary waste going into our landfills and oceans, cut back on the energy it takes to produce and transport the bottles, reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals like BPA, and stop supporting an industry moving to turn water from a common resource into an expensive commodity.
