Healthy Water, Healthy Kids

October 16, 2014 by Laura

By Jennie Saxe Like most children, my kids interact with water in many ways, from the moment they wake up to the moment their little heads hit their pillows. Every day, my boys use water for drinking, bathing, and brushing their teeth. The clothes they wear and the dishes they eat from get washed in water as well. They also love swimming, splashing in puddles, and hiking near (and sometimes falling into) Crum Creek. Because water interacts with nearly every part of our children’s lives, ...[READ MORE]

Drinking Dirty Water – Is America’s Water Safety In Jeopardy?

March 21, 2013 by Laura

Drinking Dirty Water - Is America’s Water Safety In Jeopardy? Civilization is only as strong as its water supply. Communities and cities, as well as their economic stability, can quickly and easily be bruised, if not toppled, by the unchecked outbreak of waterborne microbes such as viruses and bacteria. Subtler, long-term mayhem may be wrought upon the bodies of our citizenry by the preponderance of chemicals, hormones and pharmaceutical by-products thought to lurk in the water supplies ...[READ MORE]

NRDC – Defending Our Right To Clean Water

July 21, 2011 by Laura

NRDC -Peter Lehner Last week, the House of Representatives passed one of the worst pieces of legislation I've ever seen. The bill, HR 2018, overturns almost 40 years of federal safeguards that protect our water quality. Under the bill, the EPA would no longer be able to properly enforce the Clean Water Act. Your representative voted the wrong way on this bill. Click here to let your representative know you disagree with the vote. "I personally have worked for decades to clean our waters, ...[READ MORE]

Hydraulic Fracturing – What it's about and why you should care

June 14, 2011 by Laura

The Fracking Fuss What it's about—and why you should care by Sheryl Eisenberg Fracking is all over the news these days, but what exactly is it? A.A harmless way to get natural gas out of the ground. B.A fictional euphemism in a TV series for, well, you know what. C.The answer to global warming. D.None of the above. If you answered B, you really know your popular culture. It was, indeed, an expletive used in Battlestar Galactica, as my business partner keeps reminding me. She can't help ...[READ MORE]

Tips for Lead-Free Tap Water

June 9, 2011 by Laura

According to the EPA, exposure to lead in drinking water can result in delayed physical or neurologic development in infants and children, and can cause high blood pressure, kidney problems, and cancer in adults. Moreover, a growing body of evidence suggests adverse health effects result even at blood levels below the 10 µg/dL “level of concern” at which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends intervention.   “Lead in water is an underappreciated source of lead intake,” ...[READ MORE]

Gasland – A Documentary Film by Josh Fox

May 12, 2011 by Laura

When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. "The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling ...[READ MORE]

EPA Tackles "Fracking" (Hydraulic Fracturing)

May 12, 2011 by Laura

With the push for energy independence and fuels that emit fewer greenhouse gases, domestically produced natural gas has been growing in popularity. But alongside this growth have come concerns that hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), a procedure used in the extraction of natural gas and oil, may pollute ground and surface waters. Responding to increasing public pressure for federal action and a call by the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Conference Committee, the U.S. Environmental ...[READ MORE]

Recently, Senators Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., introduced Senate Bill 79, the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children From Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011. Welcome to the water filter lady’s blog! Meet Laura…

I have been in the water filter business since 2006. My goal is to help educate you. Deciding to drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water can have huge benefits for the earth. We can eliminate unnecessary waste going into our landfills and oceans, cut back on the energy it takes to produce and transport the bottles, reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals like BPA, and stop supporting an industry moving to turn water from a common resource into an expensive commodity.
