Plastic Recycling Can Make A Difference

November 9, 2013 by Laura

In 2011, the U.S. generated 32 million tons of plastic waste, accounting for near 13 percent of the nation’s total garbage, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. This waste included nearly 14 million tons of plastic packaging and containers, roughly 11 million tons of durable goods such as household appliances, and almost seven million tons of non durable goods, such as cups, plates, and utensils. Despite the enormous amount of plastic waste generated in 2011, only eight percent was ...[READ MORE]

Annie Leonard's New Video – "The Story of Solutions"

October 23, 2013 by Laura

The Story of Solutions explores how we can move our economy in a more sustainable and just direction, starting with orienting ourselves toward a new goal. In the current 'Game of More', we're told to cheer a growing economy -- more roads, more malls, more Stuff! -- even though our health indicators are worsening, income inequality is growing and polar icecaps are melting. But what if we changed the point of the game? What if the goal of our economy wasn't more, but better -- better health, ...[READ MORE]

Bottled water found to contain over 24,000 chemicals

September 19, 2013 by Laura

Bottled water found to contain over 24,000 chemicals (NaturalNews) Widespread consumer demand for plastic products that are free of the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) has led to some significant positive changes in the way that food, beverage and water containers are manufactured. But a new study out of Germany has found that thousands of other potentially harmful chemicals are still leeching from plastic products into food and beverages, including an endocrine-disrupting chemical ...[READ MORE]

MIDWAY – A Film By Chris Jordan

July 9, 2012 by Laura

The MIDWAY film project is a powerful visual journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk ...[READ MORE]

Plastic Pollution – Can we make a difference?

August 12, 2011 by Laura

Plastic is forever Plastic creates toxic pollution at every stage of its existence: manufacture, use, and disposal. Plastic is a material that the Earth cannot digest. Every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists, including the small amount that has been incinerated and has become toxic particulate matter. Plastic poisons our food chain In the environment, plastic breaks down into small particles that attract toxic chemicals. These particles are ingested by wildlife on land and ...[READ MORE]

Plastic – A Cancer In Our Environment

July 2, 2011 by Laura

Plastic – A Cancer In Our Environment- Florida Keys Wildlife Rescue Silently spreading, leaching toxins, maiming and killing, plastics, the darling of modern society because of their versatility and heretofore low cost, are beginning to show their true colors. Derived from chemically-altered petroleum and often combined with toxic additives, plastics are no longer inexpensive to produce, due to increasing oil prices, nor are they inert products; they release toxins into the environment. People ...[READ MORE]

Dire forecast of marine life catastrophe – San Francisco Chronicle

June 22, 2011 by Laura

The world's oceans are degenerating far faster than predicted and marine life is facing extinction due to a range of human impacts - from overfishing to climate change - a report compiled by international scientists warned Tuesday. Enjoying the Beach—Without Ruining It

July 8, 2010 by Laura

GOOD Instructions: Enjoying the Beach—Without Ruining ItSummer is officially here, which means many of us will be beach-bound. Before you slip into your swim suit and pack up the station wagon, however, we have some important reminders. Last year, the Ocean Conservancy organized it's 25th annual International Coastal Cleanup—an enduring effort worth celebrating, but also a little depressing if you consider why it's even necessary. The reason, of course: We're a messy bunch. Last year, almost ...[READ MORE]

Welcome to the water filter lady’s blog! Meet Laura…

I have been in the water filter business since 2006. My goal is to help educate you. Deciding to drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water can have huge benefits for the earth. We can eliminate unnecessary waste going into our landfills and oceans, cut back on the energy it takes to produce and transport the bottles, reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals like BPA, and stop supporting an industry moving to turn water from a common resource into an expensive commodity.
